portraits of each by Scott Garfield. I retouched them, and then filtered all using Optic's historical film stocks to make them look period correct. I had a lot of fun figuring out how to lay out this cover. Archival scans of the New York Evening Graphic show the publication had a distinct style with which they pushed the scandals of the day. I sought out graphic motifs they used such as the frame borders around the oval portraits of Nellie and Fay on the cover, and through its very structured design, hoped to present all the elements in such a way that a quick read by the audience would be successful. Babylon portrays the transition to talkies, with all the pain involved for both cast and crew. For Jack Conrad, it's a 19th century war romance called The Captain. The scripted scene has Jack entering the theater from the street, eager to see how the audience responded. The street-level poster cases would feature a one-sheet for the movie. Working from a still shot during the filming of the one scene from this film within the film, Steven Chorney painted Conrad and his leading lady in traditional media. The poster design was adapted from a format used for several John Gilbert films. In the nearly four months I spent designing during the last of the prep period, through principal photography, and then and on and off through post-production until late August 2022, I worked on over forty different items for Babylon. Big period projects like this, with so many graphics key to the storytelling don't come along all that often, and I'm very grateful I had the opportunity to do them in collaboration with the many fine artists who channeled and delivered the movie star advertising styles of the era, the photographs of Scott Garfield, my essential partner, and the great support of all my colleagues in the Babylon Art Department.
