Do I need to be proficient at Unreal Engine to entertain using a volume wall? What are the downsides? What are the costs? These may just be a few of the questions you're asking yourself right now. In simple broad strokes, the LED wall, or volume, is just another backing. What makes this backing unique and incredibly exciting to those of us who design sets for movies and television is that whatever image is on this particular backing is completely ours to design. And . . . it can be a moving image that changes perspective when the camera moves giving a true sense of depth. It's as if you are really looking out into the world that you've designed! Backings, or backdrops, which have traditionally been hung outside windows in a set on a sound stage, are an element used to create realism outside those windows. The backing is meant to extend the world of a set, but designed to be invisible, so to speak. If the audience identifies it as an artificial image outside the windows, it has failed in its purpose. There are tips and tricks when using a backing that can help ensure its success, and as we'll see, those same tips work with the LED walls.
