"invisible" design. The crew painted out yellow street lines and curbs for blocks. We removed parking meters and clad over contemporary aluminum framing of newer windows and doors, making them wood. The production added all the signage and window dressing, and a layer of WWII propaganda posters, built period façades over newer storefronts. Art Director Sam Kramer kept all of it moving, making sure the myriad of doors, awning, signs, etc., all got to their proper shops. The greens department made all the clean brick and concrete in a new pocket park disappear, turning it into a weedy lot. Then picture cars brought in the period autos—all a little beat and not too new, the finishing touch. The Original Peaches One afternoon, producer Hailey Wierengo asked me to come down to the Peaches' house set. Curious, I walked over. She had visitors—original AAGPBL players Maybelle Blair (Peoria Redwings) and Shirley Burkovich (Rockford Peaches) were there. They shared great stories of their time in the league, full of details we immediately stole. As they sat in the telephone room of our set, Maybelle said, "This feels just like my house growing up. It really takes me back." They were enveloped in memory as I listened with producers Will Graham and Hailey and set decorator Diana Stoughton, who was responsible for so much of it. To have the opportunity to sit and be validated by those women was by far one of the best and most rewarding moments on the project.
