SALLY FIELD, IN A NOW-ICONIC pose from
her Oscar-winning performance as a textile
mill worker in the 1979 feature film Norma
Rae, is front-and-center in SAG-AFTRA's
collage oil painting by the late Arsen Roje
(1937–2007). In 1990, the Los Angeles Times
praised Roje's art of classic films: "Cinema
buffs will love the paintings of Arsen Roje …
Roje paints large works
that duplicate classic film
stills. We see a youthful
Kirk Douglas as the arch
private investigator interrogating the blonde
in distress. Then there's the 20-year-old
Robert Mitchum entering a Casablanca
boudoir to find Rosalind Russell preening at
her vanity table."
Titled Union, Roje's painting was one of
several dozen artworks commissioned by
Screen Actors Guild in 1993, in anticipation of
its move into 5757 Wilshire
Blvd., where SAG-AFTRA's
national headquarters are
still today. As part of SAG's
Union, 1993,
oil on canvas,
87 x 117 inches
by Arsen Roje.
