With Union, the primary goal was to represent the strength of unity and the diversity of the Screen Actors Guild's membership in film and television, both past and present. The committee whittled down the photos to a group of about 30, from which they chose the final 19. All but five of the members depicted were still living at the time Roje painted it: Lucille Ball, Henry Fonda, Jackie Gleason, Will Sampson and Barbara Stanwyck. Four former members of the National Board, Fonda, Mako, Carroll O'Connor and Sampson appear, as well as SAG Life Achievement recipients Burt Lancaster (1991), Rita Moreno (2013), Sidney Poitier (1999), Barbara Stanwyck (1966) and, now, Sally Field. Union is an important symbol of unity at SAG-AFTRA national headquarters in Los Angeles.
