The theater scene was shot at the Long Beach Performing Arts Theater, adding a custom stage and curtain. DP Adam Bricker and his team had fun with gobo lighting patterns throughout all these spaces to make it feel a bit theatrical. The scene where Deborah and Ava are kicked off the ship was shot on a Harbor Breeze boat which was then extended in VFX. State Fair Episode five brought us to the Illinois State Fair. The script called for seven distinct areas of the fair, including a tent stage, boardwalk, entrance, water gun game, eating area, caricature artist stand and a logistically challenging 'slingshot' carnival ride. The only slingshot ride in the LA area happened to be at Six Flags Magic Mountain. Fortunately, with some modifications, the tree-filled park would work great for the other six fair scenes. Unfortunately, the slingshot was no longer operational, and after locking in the location, we learned we would have to build it from scratch. Set Designer Jiarui Bai drew up some well-studied plans of a slingshot pod and platform. Built by a genuine carnie from Riverside County, it was a bit too 'janky,' so construction coordinator Will Thayer (thank God for union crews) made some modifications and Rob drew a literally "brain melting" cartoon which Evan incorporated into the overall design. Assistant Art Director Michael Piccirillo oversaw the overall build and install, and a condor held up the faux cables for a very effective carnival ride. A. CRUISE SHIP THEATER. PRODUCTION STILL. B.
