The design is more mid-century, looking into the future, with less influence of the past and the grandparents. The dining table replicates a specific piece that Spielberg and his sisters recalled being an important feature of their home. Los Gatos, California The third Fabelman house is an archetypal Northern California Craftsman. The design— older, gloomy, spare—wasn't informed by any specific reference from Spielberg's childhood. The constructed interior set was designed to reflect the darkening mood of the Fabelmans' journey to the west. The clutter of unpacked moving boxes suggests a family in transition in more ways than one. During my first conversation with Steven about The Fabelmans, he told me how reflective he had become about his life during the height of the pandemic. Now looking back in his mid-70s in his heartfelt collaboration with his co-writer Tony Kushner, I think that he found a balanced way to deeply express the DNA-level origins of the separate-but-equal emotional pulls within him, coming from the artistic nature of his mother and the more scientific and strategic character of his father.
