can see the depths of the ocean, but you stay close
to the light. We also needed a certain sophistication
to capture the sensibility of this character—we
always had to consider how HE sees reality—for
Silverio, the surreal and the real are the same.
This perspective allowed the production to
combine different design elements from other
eras—the film features historical events mixed
with the present. We tried to reflect that in the
sets, costume and vehicles by mixing elements
from the last five decades, spanning Silverio's
life and his memories. An example of this is the
moment in which Silverio visits his old-time
colleague and former workplace in the main TV
studio. He descends a staircase and suddenly
he finds himself in a TV show from the late
1970s or early 1980s with its specific code of
