Red Dre
The costume needed to say and do a lot to
introduce the character Nellie LaRoy (Margot
Robbie). Nellie comes from New York with very
little means. She crashes a big party thrown
by Don Wallach (Jeff Garlin), a fictional Holly-
wood producer, because she wants to make
an impact and be discovered. We landed on
her silhouette after finding a piece of beauti-
ful red silk from a vintage vendor. Wrapped
around her neck and fastened to tap pants, it
felt like something she could have put together
herself. The scarf knotted at her hips had a lot
of movement and worked beautifully with the
choreography. I chose red because it is a strong
color on film with connotations of carnality
and power. Also, by keeping the hue solely for
Nellie, I could be sure she would stand out in
the frame.
