CODA
CODA—which stands for Child of Deaf
Adults—tells the story of a deaf fi shing family
fi guring how to deal with its one hearing
member who turns out to be a gifted singer.
Filmed on Cape Ann, Massachusetts, the
city of Gloucester and the towns of Essex,
Rockport and Beverly provide locations—
from the weathered family home, the boats,
docks and warehouses, a magnifi cent granite
quarry fi lled with water, to a cove protected
by huge stone inlets bathed in light from a
picture-perfect sunset—that are deeply true
to the story.
DRIVE MY CAR
Spanning the length of Japan from Hokkaido to
Hiroshima, and even across the Sea of Japan
to Korea, locations in this quietly mesmerizing
story deftly evoke the emotional history of
Hiroshima, the bitter cold of Hokkaido and the
unspoken divide in Korea. Haunting images
built around the car and the endless roads it
travels allow the characters to parse their own
grief and rebirth through both the physical
journey and a parallel journey with a stage
production of
Uncle Vanya.
