For Emmett's room, there were several details about things he liked, including baseball and his favorite player, as well as his tidiness and desire to keep his clothes organized, as he was such an essential helper with the chores around the house. Specifi c details like the washing machine she used were found by the resourceful and dedicated prop master, Frank Gray. Exterior Mamie's The production searched throughout Memphis and the Mississippi Delta for an acceptable building that we could cheat for Mamie's Chicago brownstone. Just when we were ready to compromise on this very important detail and select something that would "just work," producer Michael Lohmann proclaimed that we should just build it. That was the only way any of us would feel that we were honoring the authenticity of our hero character's life and legacy. Her home is where she underwent the massively transformative process of raising her only child to mourning his death. In recreating the building for Mamie and Emmett's home, Set Designer Adie Kaplan studied the architectural style and details of Mamie and her neighbor's two-story brownstones through photographs and other Chicago architecture references.
