8 2 P E R S P E C T I V E | M AY / J U N E 2 0 2 2 There was a range of aesthetics for the story during this period, contrasting the two regions of the country where it took place; the North and the South. Not only were there obvious distinctions in style and class, but the decision was made that a contrast in color would be a subtle way to diff erentiate the two, giving Chicago scenes warmth and the southern scenes a coldness. This further enhanced the emotions that were intertwined within each character's experiences. Interior Mamie's Mamie's second-story apartment was laid out with the guidance of descriptions from her autobiography, the widely viewed photos of Emmett leaning on their television and the typical layout of the exterior Chicago brownstone where they lived. Her sense of style was widely displayed when she emerged onto the world's stage for speeches dedicated to justice for her son through her fashion and poise. Set decorator Tyler Worrock located vintage pieces that captured Mamie's youth, as well as older antiques to instill her mother's strong infl uence upon her life. With vintage wallpapers throughout and warm rich wood tones, the series started with a space that would show a transformation of Mamie's stability to the fi nale episodes when she felt as though she lost control A.
