The crew used an empty residential lot in Greenwood and went through the tedious process of safely building a backlot with containers for structure. Through rain and snow, construction coordinator Lanny Henson and lead scenic, Maureen Kropf, along with their dedicated teams, braved the winter elements to make it happen in six weeks. Filming began in January, and the entire beginning of the story took place in the summer heat of August, which meant the greens department had their work cut out for them for every exterior location. The lead greensmen, Ryan Rowe, and his team were always prepared with silks, fl owers and sod as needed to stay ahead of the shooting crew and the arduous task of recreating a lush season when everything was brown and depleted. Mose Wright's Home One of the greens department's biggest jobs was to build and install cotton fi elds where there were none. Particularly at Mose Wright's home exterior. Mose was Emmett's uncle, who was a sharecropper in Money and whose home Emmett was visiting with his cousins when he was kidnapped by Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam. Cotton and farming were a huge part of Mose's lifeblood, as it was for many Black people in the South at that time. Early in preproduction, Ryan and a few greensmen harvested a quarter of an acre, which was estimated to be around seven thousand cotton plants, from a farmer who was willing to sell it to us. Often a farmer's harvest is already accounted for before it is picked, so we were lucky to acquire the amount needed at the peak time. Mose Wright's home interior and exterior location was an existing house in Greenwood. The crew screened in the porch, installed some interior walls and built a weather-tight addition on the home to accommodate the harrowing sequence of the kidnappers walking from room to room until they found Emmett as he slept alongside his cousins. Based on historic photos of Mose's home, we were able to closely replicate the humble yet "nice" sized home for someone of his status for that time.
