www.postmagazine.com 2 POST MAR/APR 2022 EDITOR'S NOTE he success of Warner Bros.' The Batman is a clear sign that audiences are heading back to theaters. Directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson and Zoë Kravitz, the feature has racked up more than $350M at US box offices, making it 2022's fir t blockbuster. Weta FX contributed more than 300 visual effects shots to the film, joining other ontrib- utors that included ILM, Scanline VFX and Crafty Apes. Weta's most notable sequence is a climactic car chase in which Batman (Pattinson) is pursuing Colin Farrell's Penguin character through the streets of Gotham and onto a busy highway, resulting in a crash that flips th villain's vehicle (pictured). Weta VFX supervisor Anders Langlands provides insight into the studio's work (turn to our "Cover Story" on page 10), which included creating a CG version of the Batmobile, along with the infamous Batcave and Gotham's City Hall. Like so many movies that were in production over the past two years, The Batman also ex- perienced production delays due to the COVID outbreak. This month, we take a look at some of the companies that are offering "Remote Workfl w" solutions (page 27), including Avid, EditShare, Light Iron and Molinare (with more on the Post website). Collectively, these com- panies offer tools for remote dailies, editing, color grading and more, helping to cut down on the need to travel or assemble a large crew on location. We also have a look at the latest "Workstations" (page 24), which are designed to serve as the heart of any post production pipeline, whether it be animation, graphics, editing, color grading or audio post. In some cases, a single workstation is tapped to do it all! Music videos, for example, are often produced and posted with just a small team, and of- ten times the director also serves as DP and editor, so having the right workstation can truly empower them to deliver an artist's vision. On page 16, we look at a number of new music videos that achieved high-end results with only skeleton crews. That said, Coldplay's Let Somebody Go could be considered the exception. Co-starring Selena Gomez and loaded with visual effects that are often reserved for feature films, th music video tapped the teams at Tippett Studio and Mod to deliver a world filled wit never-ending staircases and kaleidoscopic perspectives. Tippett VFX supervisor Brad Fox shares his experience on the project, which marks the studio's fir t music video, in spite of an extensive commercial and long-form reel. Turning to the Post website, I invite you to check out our latest Post TV podcasts. I recently spoke with VFX legend and multiple Academy Award-winner Rob Legato, who looked back on his career, as well as to the immediate future and the exciting opportunities that virtual production techniques are now providing. I also moderated a "Women in Audio Post" panel featuring three successful professionals, each of whom followed a unique path to get where they are today. They shared their experiences and offer career advice to those trying to break into the field. isit postmaga- zine.com for links to the podcasts, and to check out our daily news updates.
