Mumm is rolling out its own version of the red carpet as it reintroduces itself to the U.S. market. Leveraging its famed red sash ribbon, the sparkling wine is making an appeal not only to its traditional audience—peo- ple who fondly recall the bubbly’s glory days—but also to a younger generation. Gen-X Chef de Caves Didier Mariotti H brings a distinct style to the cuvées. “The point is to stay on the fresh side of Chardonnay. I’m not looking for fruity and complex; I’m looking for chalk and minerality,” he said at a New York rollout event. Slowly rebuilding the portfolio’s prestige, Mariotti added the esteemed 1998 Cuvée R. Lalou a couple of years ago. The core of the re-launch is the highly-rated non-vintage Mumm Cordon Rouge (SRP $38). Ditch the dainty dishes, says Mariotti: He pairs Mumm with grilled lamb and chicken. —Lana Bortolot Mumm Chef de Caves Didier Mariotti. 20 / the tasting panel / august 2010
