www.postmagazine.com 2 POST JAN/FEB 2022 EDITOR'S NOTE he nominees for the 94 th annual Academy Awards were announced on February 8 th , and throughout this issue of Post, you'll find overage of many of 2021's leading films The Power of the Dog received the most nominations – 12 – so we kick things off with over- age on page 4, where Peter Sciberras, who is nominated in the Film Editing category, talks about his collaboration with Jane Campion, who's nominated for her work as a director. The film s lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch is also nominated for an Oscar, along with Jesse Plemons (Supporting Actor) and Kirsten Dunst (Supporting Actress). The Best Picture nominee was shot by Ari Wegner, who is recognized for the film s cinematography. Director Kenneth Branagh's Belfast was also well received, scoring seven nominations, including a director's nod for Branagh, along with those for Actor in a Supporting Role (Ciarán Hinds), Actress in a Supporting Role (Judi Dench), Original Song ("Down To Joy" — Van Morrison), Sound (Denise Yarde, Simon Chase, James Mather and Niv Adiri) and Motion Picture. On page 6, editor Una Ni Dhonghaile — who used Avid Media Composer 2018.12 — explains how the film came ogether and some of its more challenging scenes. Dune is another film th t registered with Academy voters, receiving ten nominations, includ- ing those for Cinematography (Greig Fraser), Film Editing (Joe Walker), Original Score (Hans Zimmer) and Sound (Mac Ruth, Mark Mangini, Theo Green, Doug Hemphill and Ron Bartlett). Denis Villeneuve directed the latest telling of Frank Herbert's 1965 science-fiction n vel, which is also nominated in the Best Picture category. Karen Moltenbrey, editor-in-chief of Post's sister publication CGW, recently spoke with Paul Lambert, who is part Dune's Oscar-nominated VFX team — a team that also includes Tristan Myles, Brian Connor and Gerd Nefzer. She reports on some of the feature's 1,700 visu- al effects, most of which were created by the team at Dneg. You can learn more by turning to her feature on page 30. Karen also spoke with the team at Walt Disney Animation Studios about their work on Encanto, which is nominated for Original Score (Germaine Franco), Original Song ("Dos Oruguitas") and Animated Feature. Co-directors Byron Howard and Jared Bush share their insight into the challenges they faced in making an animated film th t's rooted in Colombian culture and centers around a multi-generation family that expresses itself through song and dance. You can read about it in her extensive feature, which begins on page 24. I had the chance to speak with editor Cam McLauchlin, who spent two years cutting director Guillermo del Toro's film Nightmare Alley (page 14), which is in the running for the Best Picture Oscar. The feature stars Bradley Cooper, Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett and Toni Collette, all of whom appear on this month's cover. McLauchlin, who edits on Avid Media Composer, shares his experience working with the director and how the film volved throughout the post production process. Virtual production techniques are something that many feel will impact the filmmakin process in the year ahead. A number of studios are already using LED screens, motion-cap- ture volumes and game-engine technology to speed up the production process by capturing in-camera visual effects, significantly shor ening the time needed for post production. Pros from studios that include ILM and Dimension share some of their knowledge of virtual pro- duction in a feature that begins on page 18. Virtual production, according to Dimension's Steve Jelley, is still in its V.1.0 iteration, making it both an expensive and technically-sophisticated process to employ. But Jelley feels that is going to change as the technology becomes democratized and more creatives gain an understanding of this new workfl w. All of those we spoke with agree that you can expect to see more use of virtual production techniques in productions in the year ahead.
