"Thanks for offering this opportunity! As a brand- new teacher, it was extremely valuable for me. I look forward to having more opportunities to learn and engage in the future." - Quest attendee For Geary, the Quest was a great opportunity to maximize the benefits he realizes from Association membership. "I have no interest in being merely a dues-paying member of any organization," he said. "I wanted to find out ways in which I could more actively use my particular abilities and interests within the context of WEA. " President Hutcherson was pleased with the feedback shared by attending members of this year's Quest. "I'm so happy to know that participants felt this event was worthwhile," said Hutcherson. "We know how incredibly busy our educators are and, especially in the COVID-19 era, it's such a big commitment to attend an event. I'm proud of our staff and governance leaders for providing so much value to our members and making this an informative, enjoyable event for everyone." According to Pr esident Hutcherson, the focus on social and racial justice was member-driven. "We're seeing a lot of requests for training and information on these topics as educators seek to better equip themselves to serve students," he said. "We were able to offer newly-developed training created through WEA's Safe and Just Schools cadre that can be replicated in locals across the state." (Learn more about Safe and Just Schools cadre work on page 18). This year, in addition to leadership skills and Association resources, the Visionary Quest emphasized education centered around social and racial justice topics. "These are absolutely topics that will come up not just in my classroom but in conversations and interactions that I have in my personal life as well," said Geary. "I appreciated the opportunity to both learn new information and to discuss some of these issues in a civil and constructive way. These are important conversations to have, no matter our backgrounds or personal views, with the goal of personal growth and doing the best that we can to support every student in our schools!" Coming home, I feel refreshed, re-energized, and ready to get back into the swing of things both in my school and in my local/state. - Quest attendee I can't emphasize enough how pleased I was that I came! When it came to the info and the presenters, everything was first-rate! - Quest attendee Geary encourages his fellow WEA members to attend conferences and training opportunities held by the Association. "I feel like I gained significantly in my knowledge of and appreciation for the variety of things that WEA is doing to promote and sustain public education in Wyoming as a result of my attendance," he said. "I also have a much clearer picture now of my own "fit" within that work and of the opportunities that exist for deeper engagement. Especially for WEA members, why wouldn't you want to learn about how to actively push forward an organization that you're part of?" Especially for WEA members, why wouldn't you want to learn about how to actively push forward an organization that you're part of?
