www.postmagazine.com 2 POST MAY/JUNE 2020 EDITOR'S NOTE n a normal year, Post would be kicking off its "Summer Movies" coverage, with details on the season's initial releases and insight into the studios that pulled off their block- buster VFX, soundtracks and editing. But this year has been anything but normal, and with theaters closed due to COVID-19, the film coverage will have to be put on hold until we can all, once again, venture out to our favorite cinema. Fortunately for the world of content creation, there are other outlets to entertain audiences, so this month, we look at a number of shows that are streaming on services such as Netflix, Hulu and Quibi. Our cover story looks at Netflix's hugely popular series Stranger Things, which was in pro- duction and post of Season 4 when the quarantine was imposed. I had a chance to talk with editor Dean Zimmerman, who has a long history with the series, going back to its first season, and even cutting the pilot. Turn to page 12 for details on his experience editing the supernatural series, and how it has evolved since its debut back in 2016. Post contributor Iain Blair connects with Bruce Miller on page 10. Miller is the creator and showrunner for Hulu's equally-popular series, The Handmaid's Tale. The show is based on the 1985 novel by Margaret Atwood, and with its themes of civil war, disease, pollution and politics, is as relevant today as ever. For our Website, Iain checks in with Canadian-born, Indian/Filipino writer/director/producer Veena Sud, who has embraced Quibi's new mobile platform for her latest project, The Stranger. The 10-minute videos star Dane DeHaan and Maika Monroe, who together create an intense slasher/horror series that tells the story of a young rideshare driver who is thrown into a night- mare scenario when a mysterious passenger enters her car. Visit postmagazine.com for his conversation with the filmmaker. Karen Moltenbrey, from Post's sister publication CGW, reports on a new animated feature from Netflix called The Willoughbys. Dubbed an anti-fairy tale, the feature has the look of stop-motion animation, but is in fact 100 percent CG. You can turn to page 18 to learn more about the techniques that were used by Canada's Bron Animation to create the unique look. And I had a chance to talk with editor Robert Komatsu, who recently cut several episodes (1, 4, 7) of the limited FX on Hulu series, Mrs. America (page 16). The series stars Cate Blanchett as Phyllis Schlafly, and retells the story of the movement to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, as well as Schlafly's position as a conservative woman in the early '70s. Beyond our streaming coverage, we also have a special focus on "Remote Workflows" and a number of manufacturers that are offering solutions for a new way of working. With the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down studios, pros are finding ways to continue to work, thanks to solutions that offer remote editing, cloud-based VFX, and review & approval tools. There very well may be a solution you have been looking for mentioned in our coverage, so give it a look on page 22. In addition, we have been inundated with new "Music Video" releases, so check out our "Part 2" coverage on page 28, which continues the report from our last issue. You can expect more insight into the making of music videos this summer too! We realize that everyone is facing some sort of struggle these days, so hopefully this issue can provide a break from the stress, with useful information and a bit of entertainment.
