sagaftra.org | Spring 2020 | SAG-AFTRA 84 Hawaii Celebrates King's Legacy O n Jan. 20 in Honolulu, SAG-AFTRA Hawaii Local members, their friends and families, and staff marched in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade. This year, Amy Hill (Magnum P.I.) and Dennis Chun (Hawaii Five-0) were special guests, riding alongside the marchers. ● Hawaii Members Learn About the Future of Commercial Work O n Feb. 9, members of the Houston-Austin Local attended a two-hour educational seminar and workshop aimed at discussing the current landscape of commercial work and where it is headed in the not-so-distant future. The session, titled Why the Ad Industry and Commercial Work is "Coo-Coo Pants," was described as an educational think tank and took place at the MediaTech Institute for Creative Arts, a for-profit technical school in Houston that specializes in media production. ● Local Gives Back D ec. 7 was a trifecta for the New Mexico Local. First, the Local Board met for a 2020 strategic planning session and put a lot of great things in the works for the burgeoning market. This was followed with a well-attended, engaging general membership meeting, where the local talked about the importance of organizing and what members can do to help with the Regional Commercials Code. But the big draw was casting director Marie McMaster from 505 Studio Works in Albuquerque. A dynamic speaker, McMaster shared anecdotes, industry observations and audition advice. Afterward, local members got to catch up and mingle at a joyful holiday party. The best part of the event was the food drive held to benefit Inez Elementary School, its students and their families, an important matter to McMaster and local members. Those who brought foodstuffs were entered in a drawing with the chance to win one of several great gift bags. ● New Mexico Houston-Austin Local members after a seminar on commercial work and advertising on Feb. 9. Houston- Austin O n Feb. 15, the Nevada Local Conservatory hosted the Break into Audiobooks Today workshop at SON Studios in Las Vegas. Led by SAG-AFTRA member, audio narrator and coach Ron Butler and SAG-AFTRA Associate Executive Director and Labor Counsel Richard Larkin, everything was covered, from getting started in audiobooks to home studio basics and union contract and rate information. The feedback that was received afterwards included member comments such as, "It was more information than I anticipated, and I found it very useful to share," and "I am inspired to pursue this field further." ● Members at the Break into Audiobooks Today workshop on Feb. 15.
