Top 10 Survival Tips for Wine or Spirits Judges: Want Your Wine & Spirits to go Home with the Gold? A win here turns into a win everywhere. Being a judge for an international wine and spirits competition may seem like one big party, but when it comes down to it, it's hard work. Sure you're tasting some of the finest vintages and distilled beverages in the world (who'd complain about that?) but it's a dangerous job: blue teeth, a little vertigo, leads to some interesting dance moves at the after-party. And, seriously, you are deciding the roadmap by which many consumers will determine what beverages they'll want to drink and serve. The judges at the Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits competitions have come up with a few tips for surviving being on a judging panel that lasts six hours at a time and often has them tasting 80-100 wines and spirits in one day: Enjoy these benefits: • Announcement in L.A. Times special section June 17 • Public tastings at The Marketplace during the L.A. County Fair, with nearly 1.5 million attendance • Promotion through specialty retailers and restaurants • Opportunity to participate in Cheers – L.A.'s Wine, Spirits, Beer & Food Festival, a June 22 public-tasting event 1. Take two Turmeric tablets and one Cinnamon tablet every night, and take one Nature Made Super B-Complex with each meal. • Publicity through competition P.R. 6. Don't drink beer during lunch time. Call for Entries Early Deadline: March 30 Official Deadline: April 15 For more information, please visit us at lawinecomp.com or call Colene Nath at (909) 865-4230 2. Sleep well prior to tasting, don't party too hard the night before. 3. Don't mix high blood pressure medicine with a cup of morning coffee. 4. Since we start tasting/judging wines at 8:30 a.m., pray to the Wine Competition planners that your first round of judging isn't Petite Sirah! 5. Ask for a break time when you think you need one. 7. Eat less meat and eat more vegetables; don't forget to eat dessert – it helps your body to consume the alcohol in your body. Plus, it's yummy. 8. Listen to other people's opinion; don't push your opinion on anything. 9. Be humble and make friends. 10. Resist with all your might channeling your inner Robert Parker.
