New York City Sips Hailing a New Cab . . . and More A WHIRLWIND SCHEDULE KEEPS US BUSY IN MANHATTAN by Lana Bortolot PHOTO: LANA BORTOLOT Cyril Camus. PHOTO: DOUG YOUNG PHOTO: LANA BORTOLOT Bruno Colomer of Codorníu. I f you missed BurdiGala, the high-end upstart wine gala of the month (see Brief Encounters), that meant you had plenty of cash in your wallet to cab it around town for the number of other industry events ranging from "Provence in the City" to a taste of Toro and the South African House of Mandela (yes, that Mandela) wine launch. Here's our roundup of who and what we tasted. Winemaker Bruno Colomer, who heads up the sparkling wine production Codorníu, stopped in Manhattan on his way to the Boston Wine Show with a lineup of cavas, several of which are being released in the U.S. for the first time. New York ranks third in market sales for the producer, behind Texas and California. The Chardonnay- and Pinot Noir–based sparklers, from the Cava-Penedès DO, just south of Barcelona, are an experiment in prolonged bottle-aging, up to 18 months or more in the cellar. The Gran Codorníu Gran Reserva Pinot Noir spends 50 months on the lees. And what goes better with cava than sushi? Not much, that we can think of, so we headed over to Nobu 57 for an evening of signature appetizers with Chef Nobu Matsuhisa. Chef Nobu introduced his new hand roll box for DIY sushi enthusiasts, with all the ingredients needed to feed up to 12 people. THE TASTING PANEL's NYC team took their turn at rolling alongside Chef Nobu, with delicious results. To celebrate its 150th birthday, the House of Camus brought its special Cuvée 5.150 Cognac and its fifth-generation heir, Cyril Camus, to Scott Conant's (Top Chef, Chopped) Culinary Suite in Soho. The new cuvée is an assembly of five ancestral cognacs, each symbolizing a preceding generation. The anniversary tour also revealed a tweaked and modernized cloverleaf logo. New York Editor Lana Bortolot toasts sushi rolls with Chef Nobu Matsuhisa. Stony Hill Vineyard's Sarah McCrea, the third generation of her family's Napa Valley winery, presented the new releases in a series of lunches at NoMad. Old World in style but 60-years-young at heart (another birthday celebration), the wines, hailing from the Spring Valley AVA, confirm the winery's reputation for cult whites, with their artisanal, smallbatch mindset. The big news: the release of Stony Hill's firstever Cabernet Sauvignon, a spicy and deep dark berry easydrinker (SRP $60). The debut Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa's Talk about a Cab ride!
