Fall 2019 The Costume Designer 11 As I start my 3rd term as president of the Costume Designers Guild, I look back on my 20 years serving on the board of CDG. We have come a long way since baby! When I joined the Guild, I was member number 326. We are now almost 1,100 members, our member- ship has grown, our awards are a respected part of awards season, we bought a building, we have a thriving magazine, and our visibility in the industry is at an all time high. We are working toward pay equity in the industry, and we continue to work to protect our rights as artists and storytellers. I am proud to be part of this amazing community of passionate artists. I thank you for your continued support. Many of the CDG Board have been reelected and we have new board members join- ing us to bring their voices to the Board and represent the membership. I look forward to working Carol Ramsey, Nancy Steiner, and Michelle Cole as they start their term as Executive Board members. They all bring a wealth of experience to the Board. Our CDG Awards have been brought forward to coincide with the earlier date for the Oscars, we are a month ahead of our normal schedule. The submission process has closed and the nomination ballot opens in November. Stay tuned for updates soon. We refer to each other as brothers and sisters because we are truly a family, and we should stick together. There are political forces that are working directly to disband Unions. Even within Unions, some choose to focus on the negative rather than find a way to move forward together. In these divisive times, it's important to remember we are a large group of people who support each other and understand what we have to deal with on a daily basis. Also, we are part of an organization that protects our rights as workers, our health, and our future. Together we are stronger! In this issue of the magazine, we spotlight men's wear. So often when people think of Costume Design, they think of fabulous dresses, but men's wear is just as interesting. We are seeing bold colors and prints in suiting and new silhouettes for men. Film and television Costume Design really drives the fashion industry too. When you see the skinny suits men have been wearing for the past few years, I feel it started from inspiration from Janie Byrant's beautiful men's wear on Mad Men. She showed the 1960s fit of suits and it inspired a whole industry. I remember when you had to hunt to find the one rack of slim fit suits in the men's department, now the entire department is slim fit suits. That's the power of Costume Design. This is the largest issue of the CDG magazine we've ever produced. I want to give credit to our Editor in Chief and CDG Communications Director, Anna Wyckoff. She has put her passion and love of Costume Design to great use and made our magazine a beautiful tribute to the art of Costume Design. She makes us all look so good. Thank you Anna! In solidarity, Salvador Perez sperez@cdgia.com PRESIDENT'S LETTER UNION LABEL
