John Singleton I N M E M O R I A M 88 DGA QUARTERLY John Singleton's arrival within the directors' ranks cannot be under- estimated. Straight out of USC fi lm school, his debut feature, Boyz n the Hood (1991), established him as the youngest director, and the fi rst African- American, to earn an Academy Award nomination in that category. In the en- suing decades, he would enjoy a fruitful career as a director-writer-producer of fi lm and television, bringing an unwav- ering eye to the black experience, and earning a DGA Award nomination for The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. Singleton was also highly active in the DGA as a member of the Western Directors Council and co- chair of the African American Steering Committee. After he passed April 28, the tributes spanned from former president Barack Obama to Guild president Thomas Schlamme, who "witnessed fi rsthand the enormous impact he had on so many."
