DGA QUARTERLY 7 PHOTO: DAN DOPERALSKI Dear Members: Television has become so vast in its range, so provocative in its programming and so liber- ated from content restrictions that the biggest complaint seems to be there's too much of a good thing. If only all entertainment platforms suffered from the same problem. In this issue, we celebrate the depth and breadth of a medium that has taken the lead in creative daring. The work of Jean-Marc Vallée, the subject of our DGA Interview, illustrates this point as well as any, given what he's done with longform storytelling and the level of artistry at which he's executing. Having hailed from features, he approaches the limited series with the same logic and detail and level of experimentation as his moviemaking. In other words, there are no limitations. Our story on the role of producer-directors ("Creative Catalysts"), too, underscores the kind of consolidation of decision-making, quality control and sense of teamwork that bring out the best of everyone involved. There are a number of shows making their swan song appearances this year, among them Homeland, which we take a look back at with producer-director Lesli Linka Glatter and her team; as well as Game of Thrones, on which a trio of directors weigh in on that series' Herculean battle sequences over the years. GoT is another example of television's infinite range, having existed on a scale so epic that David Lean would be proud. As expounded upon within these pages ("Beyond Score"), music—versus original score—frequently plays a crucial role in the way directors underscore their dramas and delineate their characters, often using their own record collections to give their work a personal connection. We also train the spotlight on some talents whose stars are on the rise, including Thomas Kail, who has excelled on both Broadway (Hamilton) and television (Fosse/ Verdon) with equal aplomb; and the commercial director Kim Gehrig, whose spots for Gillette and Nike bring social conscientiousness into the Madison Avenue equation. There's more, of course, but consider this a teaser vs. a spoiler, and hopefully there will be elements of surprise along the way.
