Alda's contributions to stage, screen and television have earned him an impressive collection of accolades, including an Oscar nomination; dozens of Emmy nominations and six wins (plus an International Emmy Special Founder's Award); four SAG Awards® nominations; Golden Globes; DGA Awards (including the D.W. Griffith Award); the WGA's Valentine Davis Award; and Tony Award nominations. He's also been inducted into the Television Hall of Fame. Still, Alda's interests extend beyond the arts. Hosting Scientific American Frontiers and Alan Alda in Scientific American Frontiers on PBS ignited his passion for helping people learn to communicate better. In 2009, he co-founded the nonprofit Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University in New York, which trains thousands of scientists and medical professionals. Alda got his first Academy Award nomination in 2005. It was for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, for portraying Senator Ralph Owen Brewster in The Aviator (2004).
