In 2004, he portrayed Republican Sen. Arnold Vinick in The West Wing, for which he received another Emmy. In an interview with The Daily Mail, Alda revealed it wasn't the first time he was propositioned to be a senator. "I was asked to run a couple of times when M*A*S*H was so popular," he said. "They came to talk to me on the set and said, 'You should run for senator.' I thought, 'How ridiculous! Why would I do that? I don't know anything about it. I'm an actor, not a politician.'" Although he steered clear of a career in politics, Alda often voices his personal views. He's frequently spoken out on political and social issues, including women's rights. In 1976, The Boston Globe dubbed him "the quintessential honorary woman: a feminist icon" for his activism. Throughout his career, Alda continued to build a film portfolio: Same Time, Next Year (1978); California Suite (1978); Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989); Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993); Everyone Says I Love You (1996); Tower Heist (2011); Wanderlust (2012); Bridge of Spies (2015) and The Longest Ride (2015).
