4 • LMGI COMPASS | Winter 2019 As we write, tucked between the American traditions of Thanksgiving and Christmas, gratitude and imagination become our watchwords. Looking ahead to the coming year, let's not take for granted education, home, health, family, career and friendships. Be grateful to those who came before us—they blazed the trail to these amazing times. And do your part to mentor the next generation. We creatively solve problems for a living. Let's hone our imagination and fortitude, using our skillset to make our own corner of the world a little better for us having been there. We wish you a new year of humanity, mindfulness and the Golden Rule. As the LMGI expands globally, we are proud of Nancy Mills' international Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan cover story "Beyond Borders." The Amazon series employed LMGI members in Canada, Morocco, France and the United States. Jack Ryan boasts a sweeping cinematic feel for the small screen. The economic and physical safety net of location professionals on screens of all sizes is representation, as observed in Bill Bowling's timely essay on "The Power of Unions." Atlanta's ALM Lisa Reisman lifts off with a behind-the-scenes look at First Man, with location manager Kyle Hinshaw who discusses the problems and thrills of recreating the first moon landing for director Damien Chazelle. John Hutchinson and Les Fincher give us their insights on living and working in the city that never sleeps in "In Our City: New York." Veteran location manager Tim Hillman bridges television and features in "Career Focus." "In the News" spotlights recent union contracts, LMGI's presence at the UK FOCUS event, the Career Summit Panel at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, China's Guizhou Mount Fanjing Micro Film Festival, the new LMGI Business Partnerships and a membership update. Articles and photography submissions are always encouraged. Your ideas, your stories … they are what keeps us connected. Join us in welcoming photo editor Paul Messana to our editorial family. We are thankful to have him join Ken Haber in procuring quality imagery for the LMGI Compass. Gratitude. Imagination. Pass it on. Always a pleasure, never too busy. Ken Haber, Lori Balton, Stevie Nelson and Paul Messana FROM THE EDITORS' DESK " Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you anywhere." —ALBERT EINSTEIN " If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough." —JOHANNES ECKHART
