E D I T O R ’ S N O T E NAB 2010 — Las Vegas By RANDI ALTMAN EDITOR-IN-CHIEF raltman@postmagazine.com alize that at NAB, lip balm, breath mints and water are like cigarettes in prison — invaluable, hence my NAB 2011 plan: Randi’s “Things You Should Have Remembered” booth that will sell the afore- mentioned items, plus moisturizer and antibacter- ial lotion. I’ll make millions! Millions, I say! Until I make it rich on bloody, chapped lips and I a fairly rational fear of germs, I am keeping my day job: reporting on the latest and greatest tools and technology, and people and projects in the media and entertainment industry. Post was at the NAB show this year — which boasted 88,044 attendees, up from last year’s 82,650 — streaming live reports from our booth daily. With the help of host and filmmaker extraor- dinaire David Basulto, Post and its editors inter- viewed the likes of Ted Schilowitz from Red, who gave us a preview of the new Epic camera (it can shoot up to 5K!), as well as Arri’s Glenn Kennel, who brought the company’s new Alexa with him. Quantel’s Steve Owen stopped by to discuss the company’s 3D stereo and workflow offerings, and early stereo 3D adopter Steve Schklair of 3ality P O S T S C R I P T Pushing…and resisting stereo 3D I t was impossible to attend this year’s NAB show and not pick up on the stereo 3D trend, be it in the form of acquisition, work- flow or display products. Panasonic had a 3D theater where attendees By MARC LOFTUS SENIOR EDITOR mloftus@postmagazine.com could — with the help of passive glasses — view 3D footage. The company is partnering with DirecTV on three new 3D channels that will launch this summer, and Panasonic is steadi- ly working on delivering 3D production tools such as camcorders, professional monitors and related technology to make stereo 3D content production and delivery a reality. Sony had representatives from ESPN at its NAB event, talking about the new 3D network the sports programming provider is launching this summer. ESPN 3D will debut with the FIFA World Cup on June 11, and the new network promises to deliver 85 events to viewers in 3D in the next year. Sony’s technology will be a big part of that, and will include cameras, produc- tion switchers and monitors. Grass Valley addressed 3D during its annual press event. But the company took a more cau- 2 Post • May 2010 paid $4.21 for a tube of ChapStick at my hotel gift shop… and don’t tell the girl at the register, but I would have paid more. I have come to re- discussed some new projects. Avid’s Angus MacKay talked up Media Composer 5 and how the updated toolset allows you to import AVCHD files directly from cameras and other de- vices and monitor video externally with support for the Matrox MXO2 Mini. These videos and many others can be viewed at www.postmagazine.com. Additionally, you’ll find videos and blogs from Post’s editors and contributors such as Barry Goch, David Cox, Heath Firestone and Tom Coughlin (not the head coach of the New York Giants, but the storage expert). For our second annual Post Picks from NAB awards, we had a cadre of post pros walking the show floor and reporting back on what they con- sidered this year’s top products. Our top five picks include Blackmagic’s DaVinci Resolve software for under $1K, Red’s Epic, Arri’s Alexa,Avid’s Media Composer 5 and Adobe’s Creative Suite 5. See details of these products, plus our Honorable Mentions on page 4. NAB 2010 was a good show. It was so good that some European attendees stayed in Vegas for weeks after. Or maybe that was because of the un- pronounceable volcano. I can’t be sure. Interesting. And the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Grass Valley is in a dif- ferent position than Sony and Panasonic. They are not looking to sell consumer sets, so whether or not 3D flies may have less of an impact on the company. The more I spoke with attendees — and even a few manufacturers that hoped to hop on the 3D bandwagon — the more resistance to the format I heard.“I’m not wearing those glasses at home,” was the resounding response. Then the mainstream media started questioning the format, with reports that asked,“Can stereo 3D make you sick?” Even set-maker Samsung released a state- ment warning of the health risks that can occur from watching 3D pictures: seizures, altered vision, confusion, nausea… Yikes! What works in the theater — 3D glasses — might not translate to the home viewing experi- ence, where people tend to multitask. Still, expect to see lots of 3D content this year. www.postmagazine.com REPRINTS Reprints (781) 255-0625 • (818) 291-1153 LA SALES office: 620 West Elk Avenue, Glendale, California 91204 (800) 280-6446 WILLIAM R.
