GALLERY VFX for spots Elastic helps with Red Cross ad N EW YORK — Elastic's (http://elastic.tv) Andy Hall has directed a new spot, Holiday 2012, for the American Red Cross that uses a clay character to encourage viewers to donate blood. The ad employs a clean and simple white, gray and red color palette to underscore the message, and also incorporates 3D elements. BBDO conceived the idea for the project and called on Hall, who is a founding member of Elastic — which has offices in New York and Los Angeles — as well as head of CG at boutique VFX studio A52. Kirk Shintani served as CG supervisor, and Shahana Khan performed compositing. 3D artists included Paulo de Almada, Kim Zhu, Andy Lewis, Lindsey Butterworth, Wendy Pham, Cody Woodard, Frantz Vidal and Adam Carter. Paul Yacono was Smoke artist, with Dan Ellis assisting. ArsenalFX freezes time for Beats S ANTA MONICA — ArsenalFX (www. arsenalfx.tv) helped stop time for a new spot for Beats by Dr. Dre. The :15 Beats Pill is a snapshot of a winter scene in the city. A young man holds up his Beats speaker system, which plays Phillip Phillips'"Gone, Gone, Gone." While the motion of the characters is frozen, the camera moves about the scene, with snow lightly blowing throughout. ArsenalFX creative director Lauren Mayer-Beug crafted and placed CG snow and additional CG weather elements, a CG frozen water splash from under the taxi wheel, CG curtains and CG signs. Additionally, the team composited multiple plates — shot motion control — to create the final shot The Mission goes big for Jambox V ENICE, CA — VFX studio The Mission (www.themissionstudio.com) teamed up with Anonymous Content director Mark Romanek and Spot Welders to help visualize the big sound delivered by the Big Jambox portable sound system by Jawbone. The :30 Concert Hall, out of SF's West Studios Advertising, features Welsh band The Joy Formidable. The campaign also includes the :30 Movie Theater, which highlights a theatrical audio experience of Ang Lee's The Life of Pi through Jambox. Under Rob Trent's creative direction, lead Flame artist Joey Brattesani led a team that replicated and enhanced the crowd. Working closely with Romanek, the multiple camera passes were combined to fill the venue with virtual fans. Compositing was via Flame. Silhouette was used for roto. Clean up was done by The Mission VFX team to perfect the rock hall and movie theater environments. Robert Duffy at Spot Welders cut the spot. Cottage Industries provided CG. featuring the product in hand. Color for the spot was handled in-house by ArsenalFX's Mark Leiss and Mayer-Beug. The closing tag directs viewers to retailer Radio Shack. Aardman animates Urbanara's first TV spot B RISTOL, UK — Aardman Animations (www.aardman.com) has completed work on Urbanara's first television spot. The European online homewares brand is known for offering high-quality items for the home at affordable prices. The :20 Cottonball was conceived by BBDO Proximity GmbH, and features a ball of cotton rolling through a world of fabric. Aardman used various Urbanara fabrics to construct landscapes based on the areas their products come from. Aardman used stop-motion techniques to bring the cotton ball to life as it leaves the cotton field and travels across rivers and snow, eventually coming to rest on the soft pillow and sheets of a large bed. One of the biggest challenges in creating the spot was the design and construction of the detailed landscape. Everything, from bushes to mountains, is made from Urbanara products. The creative team at Aardman experimented with the products, changing material, colors, shapes and textures until the right balance of simplicity and detail was found. Jason Fletcher-Bartholomew was producer for Aardman, with Daniel Cohen directing. Jay Grace handled animation, and DP Fred Reed was assisted by Joe Maxwell. Chris Entwistle created and rigged the models. Bram Ttwheam performed compositing. www.postmagazine.com Post0113_032-vfx galleryMLV3finalread.indd 33 Post฀•฀January฀2013฀ 33 12/20/12 10:08 AM
