The church of La Belle under construction. The wood used for the scaffolding was purposely painted in a darker shade in order to make it easier to read the shape of the church's framing. All the wood was custom milled with nominal dimensions accurate to the period E. & F. Alice's ranch was built on location complete with practical interiors. G. & H. All cabins were built on site with practical interiors. I. View of the secondary street leading to the Hotel La Belle. hide. Placing the ranch in the middle of the open plains with neverending vistas of the New Mexican landscape, ever-changing skies and majestic sunsets was the perfect choice. The design concept of the structure was to present it as an original tiny adobe cottage to which later additions had been made, a tired barn with a sagging ridge, corrals for the horses, a struggling orchard and a well in the process of being dug. The sum of it all conveying the message that life was not easy, requiring a lot of hard work in the middle of nowhere and under the stars. The entire town took eighty days to design, draw, build, paint, dress and deliver. At the peak of construction, I counted eight cranes and over one hundred workers on site. Over half a million dollars were spent on access gravel roads and base camp. The dry creek, which runs through the town, had never seen water in the past twenty years, but of course, it flash-flooded during production, threatening to wash away the bridge we built. At least a dozen rattlesnakes were captured in La Belle and relocated by a wrangler during the production. The town is proudly standing and now available as a location for filming in Santa Fe, NM.
