Summer 2017 The Costume Designer 37 Part of a wide assortment of costumes for Doomsday CD Ane Crabtree was able to take a break from buying red fab- ric by the bolt with The Passage, a pilot based on an adaptation of the Justin Cronin trilogy, for Fox, Scott Free Productions, and Sixth & Idaho Productions. It is a post-apocalyptic account of a botched U.S. government experiment that turns a group of death- row inmates into highly infectious vampires, and an orphan girl who might be the only person able to stop the ensuing crisis. Directed by Marcos Siega, it stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Saniyya Sid- ney, Vincent Piazza, Jason Fuchs, Vinessa Shaw, Brianne Howey, Genesis Rodriguez, and Zach Appelman. CD Tracey White was onboard as ACD. Looks like a busy season for CD Lorraine Carson, who just completed designing a massive action-packed pilot, directed by Joachim Rønning for Sony Studios entitled Doomsday. The catas- trophe storyline that manifests a doomsday world, allowed Car- son to create a broad spectrum of costumes within the story … everything from custom sexy hazmat suits and military uniforms to Don Giovanni Opera costumes, and a little high-end fashion thrown in the mix. To shoot a particular scene, producers shut down major streets in the heart of the city to blow out an entire block of windows à la Die Hard … definitely made an impact that day with the local news stations! Shot in Vancouver, Canada, the project's talented ensemble cast includes Claire Holt, Jack Dav- enport, Rachelle Lefevre, Dan Byrd, Taye Diggs, Justin Chatwin, and Rochelle Aytes. Executive producers Carol Mendelsohn, Julie Weitz, Mark Bianculli, and VJ Boyd are at the helm. Great news! Sony has picked up the option for series. Remake of the '80s classic Valley Girl Designing the remake of feature film Valley Girl for MGM has been an amazing research and design experience for CD Maya Lieberman. Shooting in Los Angeles, the 1983 love story of a sweet-natured San Fernando Valley girl whose world and values are rocked when she falls hard for a punk rocker from Hollywood, screamed to be reimagined as a musical! Directed by Rachel Gold- enberg with a New Wave '80s soundtrack and Mandy Moore as choreographer. Lieberman says she had the best time ever design- ing many made-to-order costumes for starring cast Jessica Rothe, Josh Whitehouse, Chloe Bennet, and Logan Paul. The leading actress alone had 38 costumes, and total count, including back- ground players, was over 1,800 period costume changes. Like, that's totally a lot of costumes, Maya. CD Meredith Markworth-Pollack is in Atlanta designing the new Dynasty reboot for the CW with the helping hand of ACD Arin Burke. Starring Grant Show, Elizabeth Gillies, and Nathalie Kelley, it is executive produced by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, with showrunner Sallie Patrick. The show follows the Car- rington family with similar storylines as the original but set in mod- ern-day Atlanta. Markworth-Pollack is honoring the iconic designs of the original by including subtle nods of '80s-style trends—and yes, there will be shoulder pads! CD Ariyela Wald-Cohain recently designed Comedy Central's pilot South Side, a workplace comedy from South Side natives Bashir and Sultan Salahuddin. Directed by Michael Blieden, the storyline is based on the brothers' childhood friends, twins Ka- reem and Quincy Young, and their real-life experiences working in a Rent-A-Center in South Side, Chicago. New to acting, the twins actually star in this project of passion, using comedy to show another side of their hometown. Wald-Cohain was chal- lenged to make the clothes look worn and lived in within the 24-hour turnaround. She says, "On set and thought the produc- tion, there was a feel of real family present with lots of laughter and improv."
