The company was also involved in panels at Cine Gear, including one with director Nicholas Schrunk and members of Red Bull Media House's production team. The group discussed the making of the feature documentary Blood Road, which follows the journey of ultra-endurance mountain bike athlete Rebecca Rusch and her riding partner, Huyen Nguyen, as they pedal 1,200 miles along the infamous Ho Chi Minh Trail in Vietnam. Their goal was to reach the crash site and final resting place of Rusch's father, a US Air Force pilot shot down over Laos. Henry Braham, DP for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, discussed filmmakers' growing preference for shoots with larger format digital cameras. He shot the new Guardians feature on Red's Weapon 8K VV. He was joined by producer/actor/writer Dean Devlin, who discussed how new formats are driving an evolution in big screen filmmaking. Red demonstrated a realtime 8K workflow that showcased 8K Helium R3D playback illustrating RAW metadata control and adjustments. Powered by Silverdraft's liquid-cooled Demon ultra-workstation, the footage originated from Red DSMC2 cameras in the booth. All of Red's cameras offer high image quality, dynamic range and the ability to simultaneous- ly record Redcode RAW and Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHR/HD. See page 30 for our full report on cameras. CUTTERS COMPLETES NHL'S SPELLING PROMO NEW YORK — Cutters, the editorial division of Cutters Studios (www.cuttersstudios. com), has created a new promo for the National Hockey League. Spelling features more than 20 NHL legends, each of whom spell out the letters of their name, as en- graved on the league's Stanley Cup. Bobby Orr, Brett and Bobby Hull, Wayne Gretzky, and Mark Messier are just a few of the greats featured in the piece, which reinforces the pride players have in being a part of what might be considered the most revered tro- phy in professional sports. "This is the first time this many hockey superstars have ever been brought together for a shoot," notes editor Steve Bell of Cutters Studios New York. "That made this whole project pretty special for all of us, and it felt like even the players were enjoying it." Spelling was directed by Samuel Bayer of Superprime Films and conceived by creative shop Baby Bear's Porridge. In addition to di- recting, Bayer also served as director of pho- tography, shooting on Arri's Alexa XT camera and capturing sound to a Nagra recorder. Cutters Studios handled editorial, audio and finishing for the promo. Bell was assisted on the edit by Roz Domingo. The piece was cut inside Avid Media Composer 8.5.3. Moises Tavera served as Flame artist and TJ Dumser handled the mix using Avid's Pro Tools HD 12.4.0. Lez Rudge at Twelve performed color correction. The piece incorporates stock from NHL Archives and music from Future Perfect.
