P E R S P E C T I V E | M A R C H / A P R I L 2 0 1 7 65 Above and right: CARY WILLIAMSON (Class of 2018) is a native of Charlotte, NC. During high school, she attended Central Piedmont Community College's dual-enrollment program for fine arts with a concentration in oil and ceramics. Upon graduation, she began pursuing an education in Production Design at UNCSA. Cary had a passion for art and design from a young age, admiring the way film brings various media together to capture a story. Cary had Photoshop on her first computer at fourteen, and has since expanded her skills to include AutoCAD and SketchUp. She is in high demand for her graphics abilities, and has also served as a set decorator, property master, and of course, with her background in painting, lead Scenic Artist. In the spring semester, she will realize her first Production Design. The 1/2" scale model pictured is constructed with foam core and balsa, and depicts a set from Cary's third-year thesis film, A BEAUTIFUL CORPSE, the story of a young pageant queen whose mother's pursuit of a perfect daughter is pressuring her to go under the knife. Left: JESSICA KUHN (Class of 2017) was born in North Carolina and attended Savannah College of Art and Design for a year before returning to UNCSA. Pictured is the concept art and front cover of a children's book designed and authored by Ms. Kuhn. The concept art was first hand drawn, then taken into Photoshop. The base of the model on the front cover was carved out of foam, the frog is sculpted in clay and the trumpet 3D printed. Background and title were later added in Photoshop. The entire book is depicted in stop- motion style and in picture- book format. Home schooled and highly creative, Ms. Kuhn began making characters from her imagination out of foam rubber at the tender age of eight and has enjoyed expanding to other media here at school. She looks forward to moving to Atlanta after graduation to start her career in film and television Art Departments. Right: LORR VOLATIER (Class of 2018) is French and was raised mostly in the Netherlands. She pursued higher education in art and design in England before coming to UNCSA in filmmaking. She has a strong passion for creating worlds visually, and has worked as a set dresser, set decorator and prop master on various projects. This year, she designed her second short film, called POLO RAINBOW, a story about acceptance and companionship between the homosexual and heterosexual communities. She uses AutoCAD, SketchUp and Lumion to communicate her designs digitally, before tackling the physical space. Pictured is her third-year thesis project model for HOME 3082, a mockumentary in the future that casts light on obsessive consumerism and regressive technological advancements. Below: KASEY MANNINO (Class of 2018) is a native to Winston- Salem and, having an early interest in sculpting and fine art, UNCSA was always on his radar. He enjoyed world building from a young age and would create his own versions of the buildings and other visual elements from his favorite science- fiction and fantasy stories with miniatures and models. Not surprisingly, his main focus has been Production Design and visual effects. These two models are for his third year thesis, MAINLINE, a road picture that never hits the road. He choose an old school diner with a lot of horizontal line to echo the road and the distance it sometimes puts between people. The rendering and model began in AutoCAD and were transferred to SketchUp, before being completed in Lumion.
