70 P E R S P E C T I V E | M A R C H / A P R I L 2 0 1 7 milestones MARTHA BERNAY 1921 – 2016 by her daughters, Marjo and Casey Bernay. Martha Bernay, the former office manager of the Illustrators and Set Designers & Model Makers IATSE Locals, died December 15 of natural causes at 95 years old. A longtime member of both locals, she worked there alongside her husband Joseph Bernay until she retired in 1985. She had been granted emeritus status. Mrs. Bernay was born on June 4, 1921 in New York, the youngest of four children. Her family moved to Los Angeles the following year, and at age 18, she married labor leader Josef Bernay. During a fifty-year marriage, they had three children. Joe Bernay, a longtime IATSE official and former International Representative, died in 1990. Martha is survived by her three children, daughter Marjo Bernay who served as the business agent of IATSE Local 790 and Local 847 from 1979 until the two groups merged with the Art Directors Guild in 2008; daughter Casey Bernay, Art Directors Guild's director of education and training; son Mark Bernay, a former videotape editor; son- in-law Dennis, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and a great-great niece.
