P LACENTIA, CA — CalDigit (www.caldigital.com) has released the next generation of its HDPro storage solution. The HDPro2 has all the fea- tures of its predecessor, but offers nearly double the speed — the unit can provide 700MB/s sustained perfor- mance with RAID-5 protection and also offers RAID-0, 1, 6 and JBOD support. The key to the HDPro2's speed is its direct connect external PCIe connection. It comes with a PCIe bridge card that takes the PCIe bus directly to its built-in con- troller. There is no delay or conversion, and its 20Gbs per- formance is five times faster than traditional fibre solu- tions. In addition, HDPro2 can be used with laptops with ExpressCard/34 slots. CalDigit says the HDPro2 is designed for HD, 2K and 4K workflows. Its modular design allows for eight hot-swappable drive modules in various capacities. The HDPro2 is available in 8TB ($5,999), 12TB ($7,999), and 16TB ($9,696) models. The green newsroom will give exhibitors the ability to reach journalists worldwide, as ex- hibiting companies will be able to post news releases and product information for free on their online NAB Show listing through a new exhibitor portal. This will reduce the need for hardcopy media kits. Direct mail pieces are being replaced with electronic communication, such as vir tual brochures and the use of social networking sites. Post-consumer recycled materials will be used for conference bags and any necessar y direct mail marketing supplies. The NAB Show is also par tnering with Carbonfund.org to provide a solution to attendees, exhibitors and speakers eager to offset the carbon emis- sions associated with attending a conference and exhibition. A link can be found on the NAB homepage. NAB is also encouraging radio and televi- sion broadcasters to join the green effor t by downloading "Going Green: A Broadcasters' Guide to Acting Locally," a guidebook that contains a variety of simple suggestions, public ser vice announcement scripts and on-air ini- tiatives that broadcasters can use to promote an eco-friendly environment. 8 Post • March 2010 www.postmagazine.com DP/director Tor Johansen (tor@torphoto.com) found a handy way to achieve professional time- code sync with an iPhone. He used the solution on a music video he shot and edited for musi- cian Willard Overstreet. Johansen was working without a Denecke timecode slate, so he prepped the playback file in After Effects, putting down the audio track and adding titles and visual timecode information, a sync pop, and a matched waveform. "I output the file in an iPhone-friendly codec and bitrate [640x480 H.264 at 2.5Mbps] and synced it to my iPhone. On the set, it played back seamlessly into the powered Mackie SRM 450 monitors," he reports. The HDPro2 drive offers RAID-0, 1, 5 and 6 protection.
