Clockwise from below: There is a huge amount of research available from the JFK library, photos that show every detail of that office, almost each object, furniture, fabric; all the props and dressing were copied, rebuilt or found thanks to set decorator Véronique Melery. The set was surrounded by blue screen to composite foliage and sky through the windows. The mantle on the north wall shows Kennedy's love of the sea, and his signature rocking chair to ease his war injury. The very accurate reconstruction comes from the mix of the CBS documentary A Tour of the White House With Mrs. John F. Kennedy of February 1962 and some of Natalie Portman's film footage. We looked for White House furniture in France (a lot of the Empire-style furniture came from France) at some furniture rentals such as Soubrier, Sapet, some 1950s and '60s objects at Ferley, Eccentrics, Old Times Period Furniture and Prop Hire (England), some antique dealers of the Rue Haute and Rue Blaes in Bruxelles, and in Holland. We rented in Los Angeles some typical American furniture that we could not find in Europe (those which were not the same as the White House's documents such as the chest (à chapiteau) in John Kennedy's bedroom) and some '60s stuff such as televisions, radios, reprints of John John's and Caroline's books (for the small library), CIA and FBI documents, files and paperwork from the offices of Bobby Kennedy and Jack Valenti, and a few books for Kennedy's bedroom. Seating was upholstered by our team. Researcher Nathalie Roubaud found the addresses of the houses that Jackie contacted to print the curtains for her bedroom.
