Center, across the spread: Three drawings by Mr. Weimerskirch detailing the extensive work done to many of the neighborhood houses to take them back to 1957. Avenue, the District's vibrant commercial center, re-created in the opening shot of Fences, began its gradual decline starting in 1956. Today, Little Harlem is but a distant memory in Pittsburgh's social and cultural history. In January 2016, I traveled to the city to find the movie. I will admit I held little hope of finding a single location that would allow Denzel to bring to life Troy's neighborhood walk. With the help of a great scout and location manager, I traveled up and down the very streets and thoroughfares that nurtured and shaped Wilson, including Webster, Wylie, Centre and Bedford Avenues. (Wilson grew up at 1727 Bedford.) One snowy week into our search, we expanded into the far-east corner of the nearby Upper Hill District neighborhood. I did a double take as I passed a vacant lot on Lyon Street, revealing through a chain link fence at its perimeter a long stretch of backyards facing each other. These overgrown yards looked untouched by time and instantly reminded me of the locations Wilson vividly describes in Fences. We all saw great potential in what would ultimately become the Maxsons' neighborhood in the movie. Our team set out the following day to try and gain access to DIRECTOR PRODUCTION DESIGNER SUPV.
