COCKTAIL COMPETITIONS 100  /  the tasting panel  /  december 2016 T he Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel is a Los Angeles landmark dating back to 1927, and its poolside, surrounded by palm trees and steps away from Marilyn Monroe's former suite, was the perfect setting for Covenant House's All Star Mixology Competition, hosted by The Tasting Panel. Ten mixologists worked with ten brands to whip up delicious cocktails that would wow attendees and judges, who voted on a final four to participate in an Iron Mixologist round, where the four would have to concoct a cocktail from the secret ingredient: ginger! It was a close race among the four finalists—Clay Wendel, Beverage Director at El Dorado, working with Michter's; Zach Patterson, owner of Melrose Umbrella Company, working with Casa Noble Tequila; Florence Henderson, Bartender at Big Bar, working with Redemption Rye; and Aaron Melendrez, Bar Director at Salazar, working with Berentzen—but in the end, Zach Patterson and Casa Noble Tequila reigned supreme, taking home $1,000, two first-class tickets on Delta Air Lines and a two-night stay at any Omni hotel, courtesy of Omni Hotels & Resorts. And best of all, it was for a good cause; proceeds from tickets sold benefited the Covenant House of California, a Southern California–based charity that helps to provide shelters for homeless youth. Charity and cocktails, a fantastic formula for a great night! ALL-STAR A NIGHT OF CREATIVE LIBATIONS SUPPORTING COVENANT HOUSE by Jesse Hom-Dawson / photos by Brent Campanelli Cocktails for an Cause
