DEPARTMENT HEADER 90  /  the tasting panel  /  august 2016 T hirty-five years ago, Don and Rhonda Carano purchased 30 acres of land in Sonoma County. Today, with vineyards certified California Sustainable by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA), they own 1,900 acres of vines consisting of 26 estate properties spanning across six different appellations. A small jump in those numbers can be attributed to a long awaited purchase in 2013—Maacama Ranch, a mountain property in Alexander Valley that takes its name from the creek that runs through it. For the past three and half decades, Ferrari-Carano has extended its reach to the north, south, east and west of its Dry Creek Valley property, leaving nowhere else to go but up lately; and the past few years that's just where they've gone—up. Maacama Ranch, contiguous to their LookOut Mountain Ranch, is virgin land once only used in the 1800s as a sheep ranch. The sky has literally become the limit for Ferrari-Carano. Ask Don Carano how they've been able to fly so high for so long and he'll tell you, "Our vineyards make the difference."
