SUMMER 2016 | wyoea.org 17 Sheridan High School recently represented the state of Wyoming in the 29th edition of the National Finals of "We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution." Students from WEA member Tyson Emborg's US Government class won the Unit Four Award: "How Have the Values and Principles Embodied in the Constitution Shaped American Institutions and Practices?" "This validates the level of effort we put in to education, as an entire state," Emborg said. "The community and statewide support this program receives from legislators, community leaders, and others is phenomenal." This recognition is the first unit award in the history of Wyoming's involvement in the national competition and only the second time in 29 years in which a Wyoming team has received any award of distinction (the last was in 2012, from now retired WEA member, and current Wyoming State Board of Education member, Nate Breen). The significance of a unit award is worth noting as it indicates the student performance, based on the scoring by judge panels, was better than at least 40 other competing schools, if not more; the top ten teams at the national competition cannot qualify for the award. Only six unit awards are presented at the event. "The level of this educational endeavor brought to students, learning and interpreting, it's a very high level of academic engagement, not just regurgitating information," Emborg said. "I view this as a culmination of a lot of work throughout education in Wyoming." A special note of thanks to the Wyoming State Legislature, the John P. Ellbogen Foundation and the American Heritage Center (UW) for continued funding and support to ensure quality civics education is provided to all Wyoming students.
