VISUAL EFFECTS www.postmagazine.com 47 POST MAY 2016 Dave Funston. "In the story, Lucifer's wings have been cut off and stolen; he wants them back and tracks them down. We see his wings on display, as an object, so we didn't have to create how they move." Zoic used Maya for 3D modeling and animation, Yeti Feathers for the complex feathering, and V-Ray for rendering. Lucifer occasionally shows his devil's red face to intimidate people. Zoic did a 3D digital scan of a stunt actor in make up to create a 3D asset to composite over Tom Ellis's head and face with Nuke. They also make an HDRI map of the live environment in the shot to cap- ture the same lighting conditions in CG. Sometimes Lucifer doesn't display his full devil's face but still hints at his true self. "We developed the devil's face and eye look with the client then separated out the eyes and red face so we can use them separately," Funston explains. "We use a secondary eye iris image to gray Tom's eyes and color shift to red with a glow. It's an additive effect, all within Nuke, not an eye replacement. So it looks like there's a light inside Tom's glowing red eyes." Zoic also does set extensions for Lux and various recurring coin effects, repurposing Stargate's CG asset of the coin that's Lucifer's passport back to Hell. The frozen moments are now shot exclusively with Arri's Alexa at 96fps and actors deliberately slowing their actions to maximize the slo-mo look. WE MUST HAVE DONE ANGEL WINGS 10 DIFFERENT TIMES, FROM ACTORS FLYING ON WIRES WITH REAL WINGS TO COMPLETE CG WINGS." Before After Stargate's Sam Nicholson (top) and Zoic's Dave Dunston (bottom): Amenadiel's CG wings (left) are modeled in Maya.
