We're here to answer questions, provide support or just listen. 13. Make an incident log If you begin having difficulties with an administrator, parent or community member, start a daily log. Record all items that could be related to future complaints/charges against you. Include dates, times and brief descriptions of incidents and/or witnesses. 11. Start your own personnel file Include: your teaching certificate; copies of college transcripts; documentation of any awards, commendations or honors you receive; records of seminars, conferences or workshops you attend; letters of praise or reprimand; copies of correspondence to or from administration or parents; written summaries of conferences with administrators, out- of-the-ordinary incidents such as disciplinary actions you've taken; and other items related to your employment. 10. Set a class goal Working together toward a goal -- such as a holiday project to help a needy family, a class trip, or a class party at the end of the year -- can help develop class spirit. Start your planning early in the fall to build enthusiasm. 9. Be prepared for controversy If you intend to teach a potentially controversial subject matter, be sure you are within board policy and make certain you mention it to your principal in advance. 8. Review your insurance Make sure you are enrolled in the insurance(s) you want – this is especially important if your employer has changed insurance carriers or your family status has changed. 7.
