Enjoy a day with absolutely nothing to do. You deserve it. Have a good idea about how to get your students engaged in critical thinking and problem solving? There's a grant for that. Want to attend a summer institute or take time out for deep research? There's a grant for that too. The Iowa State Education Association and the National Education Association offer a variety of grants for educators. Check www. isea.org under "Teaching and Learning" for a list. A small minority of people in this country will ever have the opportunity to meet a president or even a presidential candidate. In Iowa, it's a small minority that won't have the chance. Take advantage of this quirk in the presidential nominating process and go see a candidate, or three. Listen to what they have to say. Ask a question or share your perspective. Who knows what impact you'll make? When's the last time you took a ride on The Tornado in Advertureland Amusement Park? Have you looked inside the Prairie Trail Museum in Corydon or walked the Grout Museum District in Waterloo? Take in a round at Waveland Golf Course – Iowa's oldest. Spend a late night at a double-feature drive-in movie theater in Newton, Grandview, Blue Grass, Spirit Lake or off Old Highway 61 near Delmar. The ISEA Academy offers in-person and online courses at great discounts for members. Instructors hold master's degrees or have National Board Certification. Many courses meet requirements for relicensure and graduate credits and instructors are able to conduct building-level courses at group rates. Find out more at www.isea.org/academy Put your back into it. Find out what needs doing in your community and get it done. Wash some cars to raise money for a charitable organization. Knock doors for a candidate or cause. Clean up a park. Recruit some ISEA members and make it a group project. Need ideas?
