24 Winter 2014/15 x AEA Advocate WE ARE AEA! • WE ARE AEA! • WE ARE AEA! • WE ARE AEA! On October 11, 2014, AEA members across the state participated in the statewide Day of Action to get out the vote for the General Election. This was an opportunity for local associations to take action on school board races, override elections, statewide candidates, or legislative races. Members made phone calls and knocked on doors to get voters to vote for schools this past election. Several Metro Phoenix area local associations met at AEA headquarters following a showing, hosted by the Phoenix Union CTA, of Underwater Dreams, the film featuring the true story of the Carl Hayden High School Robotics Team's national triumph over university competition. Members from Phoenix Union CTA and CEA, Creighton Education Association, Glendale Union Education Association, Madison CTA, Cartwright Education Association, and Isaac Education Association phone banked members to get out the vote for schools. (1) Alhambra Education Association knocked on doors in support of their school board candidates. One of their two endorsed candidates was elected, but they now have a board majority also. Cave Creek phone banked in support of their override, which passed. (2) Deer Valley Education Association made phone calls, walked neighborhoods, and addressed postcards to support their school board candidates. Only one of their two recommended candidates won; however, it's enough to give them the votes they need on the school board. (3) Members in Flagstaff participated in Picketing at the Pines and held up signs supporting the Flagstaff override, which passed.
