October/November 2014 isea.org • ISEA Communiqué 14 ISEA AT WORK UniServ Unit Nine Director Carol Haupert makes a point during the Public Employee Relations Board conference in Altoona. She shared the stage with veteran negotiators and arbitrators who shared their negotiation "war stories." But Haupert said she wanted to share a "peace story." She explained that shortly after she began with UU9 she worked with a district that almost never settled a contract without going to arbitration. Haupert pushed to get a labor- management committee into the next contract. Both sides agreed. The committee still meets every month and they haven't gone to arbitration since it started. Retired member Sue Wiele took a break from filling out postcards to show her support of the Iowa State Education Association. ISEA retired members continue to work for positive education policy after their careers are over and serve as an excellent resource for working education professionals. Elisa Russ (left) and Koltin Pfaffle (center) accept a pair of $400 scholarships from New Hampton Education Association President Barb Havlik. The scholarships are made available through the "Dollars for Scholars" program which supports deserving seniors who are going on to the education field after high school graduation. Recipients are judged on class rank, ACT scores and the level of participation in school programs and functions. Russ and Pfaffle are children of New Hampton Education Association members. Cedar Wood UniServ Director Kim Miller (left) and East Central UniServ Director Coy Marquardt (right) show their support for the Iowa State Education Association by wearing their "Be Counted" t-shirts at a fundraiser for Iowa House candidate Kristi Keast. Keast is an elementary school teacher and a member of the Mount Vernon Teacher's Association
