16 { THE SOMM JOURNAL } OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2014 { shop talk } "One for All" GABRIEL-GLAS WINE GLASS A new wine glass from Austria is poised to take the on-premise by storm. The Gabriel-Glas Wine Glass is designed with a broader base at the bottom of the glass, giving the wine more surface-to-air contact, permitting the flavors and aromas to emerge. The conical shape at the top acts as a "bouquet driver." Some high-profile somms have something to say about it. "The mouth-blown Gabriel-Glas is my go-to wine glass," says Geoff Kruth, MS, COO of the Guild of Sommeliers. Mark Bright, Wine Director at Saison in San Francisco is also a fan. "The glass is universally compat - ible with every wine; it's the most versatile glass I've ever used. I've really put it through the ringer and it works with everything." Gabriel-Glas of Austria was established in 2009 and introduced its products—including wine and bar glasses, carafes and decanters—to the U.S. at the end of 2012. The lead-free glass, which is durable and dishwasher-safe, is available in a mouth-blown Gold Edition for $55 per stem and a molded StandArt version for $29 per piece. For more information, contact Tempe Reichardt at tempe@winegls.com. Mark Bright, Wine Director of San Francisco's Saison restaurant, uses the Gabriel-Glas Wine Glass. As the French Wine Society gears up for its tenth anniversary, the organization seeks to bolster its efforts in serving its members by increasing its dedication to members' services. To help lead the fray is Tracy Ellen Kamens, Ed.D., DWS, CWE, who has been tapped for the new Membership Director role, bringing a combination of wine industry and professional development experi - ence to the position. "We are delighted to bring Tracy on board in this capacity and know that she will help support us in our membership goals," notes Julien Camus, the Society's founder and President. Tracy will be adding to a list of French Wine Society member benefits that already include: a world-class webinar series offering resources on all of the French wine regions, including maps and a French wine term pronunciation guide; regular updates on French wines, ranging from vintage reports to what is new and notable in the wine industry; advanced notice and priority booking for French Wine Society immersion study trips in France; and discounts on French Wine Society programs as well as on wine publications and books.
