Teacher Opportunities stARt thE schooL YEAR At mim The Musical Instrument Museum in north Phoenix will present an Educator Preview Day Saturday, August 27, 2011 to introduce Arizona K-12 teachers, principals, registered student teachers, and home school educators to the educational value of a MIM field trip. Attendees will learn about changes and exciting additions to the MIM school tour program for the 2011- 2012 year; how tours connect to curriculum and educational standards; and highlights of MIM’s artist residency program. Attendees will receive materials to take back to the classroom, and tour the museum galleries for a first-hand view of MIM’s multi-media exhibits. Attendance is limited to 284 educators and requires advance registration. RSVP to education@theMIM.org by August 22 to reserve a spot. mR. hoLLAnd’s opus FoundAtion: mELodY pRogRAm Mr. Holland’s Opus Melody Program provides musical instruments and instrument repairs to existing K-12 school music programs that have no other source of financing to pur- chase additional musical instruments and mate- rials. Music programs that take place during the regular school day are eligible for this $8,000 award. Schools must have an established instrumental music program (i.e. concert band, marching band, jazz band and/or orchestra) that is at least three years old. Deadline to apply is September 29, 2011. For more information, visit www.mhopus.org/teachers.asp. nctm: using mAthEmAtics to tEAch music The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Using Mathematics to Teach Music Grant encourages the incorporation of music into the elementary school classroom to help young students learn mathematics. Any acquisition of equipment must support the pro- posed plan but not be the primary focus of the grant. Proposals must address the following: the combining of mathematics and music; the plan for improving students’ learning of mathemat- ics; and the anticipated impact on students’ achievement. Individual classroom teachers or small groups of teachers currently teaching mathematics in grades PreK-2 level who are also (as of October 14, 2011) full individual or e-Members of NCTM or teach in a school with a current (as of October 14, 2011) NCTM PreK-8 school membership are eligible for this $3,000 award. For more information, visit www. nctm.org/resources/content.aspx?id=1318. nstA/dcAt: mAKing A diFFEREncE AWARd The National Science Teachers Association DCAT Making a Difference Award recognizes and honors excellence in a science program developed and implemented by middle- or high school-level science teachers, grades 6-12. Entries must show innovative and effective teaching strategies combined with a science program that has influenced students to explore and investigate science and its application to global problems. Winners will receive $2,500 to be used to enhance or expand the winning science program; the winning school’s lead science teacher and principal will be awarded coach airfare and two nights’ hotel accommo- dation to attend NSTA’s National Conference. For more information, visit www.nsta.org/pdfs/ awards/DCAT.pdf. nctm: EmERging tEAchER-LEAdERs in ELEmEntARY schooL mAthEmAtics National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Emerging Teacher-Leaders in Elementary School Mathematics Grants increase the breadth and depth of the mathematics content knowledge of elementary school teachers who have a dem- onstrated commitment to mathematics teaching and learning. Applicants must have the support of the school principal in becoming a math- ematics teacher-leader within her or his school or district. The grant recipient will be expected to provide ongoing professional development to teachers within the school or district to strengthen their mathematical understandings and instructional practices. The professional development must include sustained in-service programs focusing on improving the content knowledge of elementary teachers within the school or district and working with teachers in their classrooms through demonstration teach- ing or co-teaching. Current (as of October 14, 2011) full individual or e-members of NCTM are eligible for this $6,000 award. Deadline to apply is November 11, 2011.
