MICHELLE WINE ESTATES Most Likely To Age Well Hoopes Vineyard 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville–Napa Valley ($60) Spencer Hoopes pegged winemaker Jason Fisher to craft his Hoopes Vineyard Cabernet as well as old ghost brand Liparita, now given a second wind. Both wines are produced at the Napa Wine Company in Oakville. The grapes for the Hoopes Vineyard Cabernet were planted on non-phylloxera St. George rootstock in 1989 and the original vineyard was all of eight acres, jutting up against a hill north of the town of Yountville, within the Oakville AVA. Today, about 90% of those vines still exist and are used in the production of this wine, which is made in limited quantities of approximately 1,000 coveted cases. Firm acidity bodes well for a long future. Barrel-aged for 32 months in 100% French oak, its earthy core lights up with a bright fruit character—but you may have to wait an hour for that part to open up. Spiced cranberries edge their way into a crevice of fudge-covered black fruit. The acidity is out-of-this-world, or maybe just Old World—a fine match for any (grilled) protein.
