CHILE A Wine for the Ages CRAFTED BY RENOWNED WINEMAKER ENRIQUE TIRADO, CONCHA Y TORO'S DON MELCHOR IS THE WORK OF AN ARTIST by Elizabeth Kate R ecently I had the great privilege of attending a tasting dinner at Santa Monica, CA restaurant Zenga with Concha y Toro's Enrique Tirado, one of the most accomplished winemakers in all of South America. Tirado is head winemaker for Don Melchor, Concha y Toro's premium Cabernet Sauvignon blend—a wine that instantly achieved international fame for its fine quality upon its release onto the market in 1987. Don Melchor is named for Concha y Toro's founder, Don Melchor Concha y Toro, who first planted grapevines imported from Bordeaux just outside Santiago, Chile, in 1883. Enrique Tirado, who crafts Concha y Toro's Don Melchor, is one of the most accomplished winemakers in South America. TP1213_104-148.indd 114 11/25/13 8:21 AM
