88 The Costume Designer Fall 2019 script, adapted from a Pulitzer Prize-winning article from journalists T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong, is based on true events, so the costumes had to be authentic and complement the characters in a way which make them take a back seat to everything happening in the scene. CD Alonzo Wilson, assisted by CD Rahimah Yoba, focused on authenticity in the tone and feel of this border- line-period show with its strong theme, a story of rape that no one believes. Heavy subject matter proj- ects need levity, and the de- sign team found plenty of it. At one point, Yoba took a day off for dental work and was prescribed medication to take. Being the constant designer, she decided to work from home and do a little online ordering to get ahead. Once the order arrived, she realized she had ordered little kids sizes for the adult cast. "We laughed so much!" recounts Wilson. "In the end, the correct sizes were gathered in time. All in a day's work, sometimes our costume lives are just, well, unbelievable."
